PDF to Dark Mode
Page colors are made grayscale before inversion. Photos and scanned pages become monochrome negatives.
Maximum combined input: 100 MB; PDF output is limited to 150 MB. Large documents can still exceed available browser memory, especially on phones. Interactive form fields are not supported; make a flattened copy with Print to PDF first.

When to use PDF to Dark Mode
Made for reading textbooks, lecture notes, papers, manuals, and ebooks at night. Soft dark turns white pages deep gray and dark text light gray; true dark turns white pages black and dark text white. Both modes make page content grayscale first, including diagrams, photos, and scans.
Quality and file size
The tool applies a grayscale blend pass and a PDF Difference overlay, so ordinary text and vector content remain in the PDF instead of becoming page images. Photos and scans become monochrome negatives; original color is removed. A viewer that mishandles either blend mode may show unchanged or unexpected colors. Scanned text stays an image and is not made searchable. Large or complex PDFs still use browser memory and remain subject to the 100 MB input and 150 MB output limits.
Frequently asked questions
Will text stay searchable and selectable?
The page content remains in the PDF under a blend overlay, so text remains searchable and selectable in viewers that render the overlay correctly.
Does this work on scanned textbooks?
Scanned pages become grayscale negatives, but the tool does not run OCR. Text in a scan remains unsearchable unless it already has a text layer.
What happens to photos and diagrams?
They become grayscale before inversion, so photos look like monochrome negatives and original color is lost.
What happens to highlights, notes, and large books?
Interactive form fields are rejected, and annotations or viewer-specific markup may not match the changed page colors. Files up to 100 MB are accepted, but a large or complex book can still exceed available memory; processing stops with an error.
